“L’Union Fait La Force”: With Unity There is Strength

Last week I was taken up with reading C.L.R. James’ The Black Jacobins, a thought-provoking book on the revolutionary potential of Haiti’s proletarian masses . James’ historical account of the San Domingue Revolution (1791-1803)  and how it relates to the French Revolution of 1789 is chilling and still relevant as we ponder race, class and political issues still  surrounding the island, especially after this week’s catastrophic earthquake.

The Haitian Revolution is extremely inspiring and witnessing the current situation in the island is appalling. As we close the week, remember what the masses have been through, what they represent and how they inspired our own intellectuals on nationhood and self-determination.

I am elated and proud to confirm the cricket family’s monetary contribution efforts to our Caribbean citizen in desperate need. The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), the T&T Cricket Board (T&TCB) and the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) will host a  charity match to raise funds for Haiti on Wednesday at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, starting at 6 pm. If you will be in Trinidad next week, please attend and support the cause. Think about Haiti, remember our Black Jacobins.
